I do not share the experience of any slow-downs by Avast at all. To the contrary, the use of cycles of Avast seems to be much less than other antivirus I have used over the years.
Apart from the ransomware shield and webshield, I particularly appreciate the e-mail shield of Avast, as we have been subject to a barrage of phishing and malware loaded e-mails, which all other antivirus did not detect. While I am certainly capable of identifying problematic e-mails, my associates may not. DIY also consumes precious time.
I don't share the experience of excessive invasiveness by Avast. In fact, I experience no invasiveness at all.
At the time of this writing, based on my experience, Avast antivirus is the best for Mac, in my opinion.
Sometimes Avast Antivirus may be stopping you from running a program or accessing web page, which you know is totally safe. Usually it’s because of the low application occurrence within the Avast community. Therefore, Avast can’t properly tell if the program is safe or not, and will try to protect you.
Unfortunately Avast is rarely also blocking a popular websites, games and services. Often when they release a new update/version which is not listed in the Avast Virus Definitions yet and it’s prevalence is really low.
Most often following programs, websites, services and games are being blocked – Google, Chrome, Gmail, YouTube, Facebook, Yahoo, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Windows Update, Outlook, Skype, Steam, League of Legends (LoL), GoG Galaxy, Roblox, Hearthstone, Battle.net, Minecraft, Dota 2, World of Warcraft (WoW), GTA V, RuneScape, uTorrent, BitTorrent, Java, Plex.

3. Report a False Positive Detection to Avast
We also strongly suggest to report the detection you believe is a false positive directly to Avast team. They will look into it and eventually confirm the reported file, software, or website is clean.
