TextWrangler is now BBEdit — and still free! It's time to switch.

TextWrangler was an all-purpose text and code editor for macOS, based on the same award-winning technology and user interface as BBEdit, our leading professional HTML and text editor.

If you are an existing TextWrangler customer, it’s time to switch to BBEdit.

Familiar

We promise that you will feel right at home, because BBEdit and TextWrangler are identical in every way that you’re used to. They’re built on the same foundation, by the same developers, with the same care; and they work the same way.

Here’s what TextWrangler looks like:

And here’s what BBEdit looks like:

See the resemblance? (BBEdit looks a lot better on those high-resolution Retina displays, too.)

Free

Like TextWrangler, BBEdit is free to download and use. There’s a set of advanced features that you can pay for — if you want to. But you’re not required to pay anything if TextWrangler has been doing the job for you.

When you start using BBEdit, there’s a 30-day period during which you can use all of BBEdit’s advanced features. When that period ends, BBEdit goes into “Free Mode”, in which it offers all of the features that TextWrangler had — and then some — at no charge.

You can also download Tincta for free from the Mac App Store

And as Tincta is open source, you can also check out the repository and build it yourself. This should not be too hard. Just take a look at the read-me.

Why Open Source

For a while now we concentrate on our efforts on two other projects:
Wokabulary, a flash card app focused on language learning for Mac, iPhone and iPad.
And Loqbooq, a decision log for project management and ADR.

Tincta still has many fans, though, (including ourselves) and we don't want to just abandon this useful tool. Therefore we decided to open source Tincta and release small updates on the Mac App Store whenever people contribute to it (also including ourselves).

Support Development

If you want to support development of Tincta, consider purchasing Wokabulary. It's the best app to learn your vocabulary.

Or make your project's decision process speedier and more transparent with our Decision logging app Loqbooq.

How to contribute

If you find bugs open an issue within the GitHub project, make sure you describe how to reproduce it and if possible include the file you were working on when you hit the bug.

If you have a fix ready, open a pull request. We will review it and merge it eventually.
